Animals in the House

← Home

In May of 2023 I was commissioned by Penguin Random House India to illustrate, in full color, the 24-spread children's chapter book titled 'Animals in the House' — authored by the beloved Anglo-Indian author Ruskin Bond. These stories tell childhood tales of Rusty, a character inspired by Mr. Bond's own childhood. In this book, Rusty recounts the various animals that he grew up around, as a result of his grandfather's passion for creatures of all kinds. Illustrating for this book involved depicting a variety of animals, from the endangered indian star tortoise to a pair of great danes.

Having grown up reading his stories like so many other indian children, the opportunity was an irresistible one. Below are a few sample spreads from the book, the illustration process, and a non-affiliate link to purchase it.

Chapter 4, Spread 20
Chapter 5, Spread 24

Very rough storyboards turned into lineart, which were colored in what was altogether a very direct pipeline. All artwork was created on Photoshop for the iPad, using KolorMarc brushes from True Grit Texture Supply.
