Arnesh Kundu, a close friend and batchmate, offered me the super-fun opportunity to create a super-stylized
opening sequence for his graduation short film. Produced at the School of Visual Arts in NYC, the 2D animated film is about a young rock band that revives
a decaying, energy-apocalypse stricken settlement.
Music forms the backbone of the film, and I was free to play with the look and content to my heart's content as long as it complemented the track.
Texture and grit were integral to the tone of the film, and I know that Arnesh is a long-time fan of mixed media animation.
Honoring these, I envisioned a diegetic existence for the opening. Using newspaper clippings about energy crises as a 'found material' background, I layered marker iterations
of the characters' masks as they themselves might have scribbled out when creating their mnky personas. Adding marker-like color completed a single frame.
Each character got a special introduction splash, featuring their instrument.
A frantic few seconds of energetic visual activity were designed to fill the high-tempo roll near the end of the sequence.
Here's the intro, holding the door open for Arnesh's stunning, electric film! Check his work out at his website here and tell him I sent you ;)
